Year 13 Geographers and Biologists enjoyed a successful field trip to Ainsdale Sand Dunes on Monday 12th October. The weather was glorious and the flora was in bloom allowing all to see spatial vegetation succession in action. Students collected a range of data by practicing their sampling strategies and geographical field skills, as well as experiencing the mobile nature of this fragile psammosere ecosystem. Searching for the rare natterjack toads and sand lizards proved as elusive as the black sheep this year, however community spirit was in abundance as 'the boys' leapt to the defence of a beached vehicle - well done and many thanks to all who came!

Year 12 and 13 Geographers were inspired in a lecture by Professor Iain Stewart (of TV fame!) and Katherine Donovan (PhD student) held by the Geographical Association in Birmingham on Tuesday evening. Students were challenged to consider the cultural geography of risk in areas of natural hazards. Katherine spoke of her fascinating research on Mt Merapi (an active volcano) in Java, Indonesia where local people believe in the volcano gods. Iain provided a range of contemporary case study material about hazardous areas, including hurricanes, earthquakes, landslides and tsunami. Iain discussed how and why people live in these areas, whether it can be accounted for through poverty (people having little choice as to where they live), or, at the other end of the spectrum, prosperity (having such financial means that loss or damage to property is insignificant). Thought provoking Geography for all!
Many thanks to all Geographers who came.
Mrs Russell and Mr Hall

Yr 8 students from Abbot Beyne and Ryecroft participated in the first inter school cycle cross race to be held at Abbot Beyne. The riders competed over a short but challenging course which contained a tough climb and a fast descent. Dry conditions resulted in fast lap times from the students. The individual race was close with a group of 3 riders from Ryecroft breaking away from the main group in the later stages of the race to take the podium places. The highest placed rider from Abbot Beyne finishing fourth. The team event (four riders per team) was also closely contested. Ryecroft held off a challenge from Abbot Beyne to cross the line first with Abbot Beyne finshing second. Well done to all the students taking part. Students at Abbot Beyne will be wearing their jeans to school to GENErate lots of money on Jeans for Genes Day, Friday 3rd October 2008!

Jeans for Genes aims to change the world for children living with genetic disorders. The money they raise each year funds care and support for children and their families, as well as research into the causes and cures of these conditions.

Genetic disorders affect 1 in 33 children born in the UK, the equivalent of around one in every class of schoolchildren. Many of these have no current treatment and more than half of all childhood deaths in the UK are linked to a genetic condition.

The theme for Jeans for Genes Day this year is GENErations and the charity is celebrating the way genes can filter down through families, influencing a child's appearance, personality, career choices and even sense of humour!

Liz Chapman, Jeans for Genes organiser said, 'We have run the event for about 5 years now and our pupils enjoy the opportunity to get out of their uniforms as well as raise money for so many charities.'

14/09/2008
This summer Abbot Beyne students have successfully completed a trip to Dubasen school in Namibia. After a year of fund raising the £20,000 needed for the project, 14 sixth formers and 3 teachers spent a week renovating the school's building and making the classrooms usable. Their hard work was rewarded with a ceremony from the local village chief and the students exchanged gifts and donated equipment to the school. Following this the team then went to camp on safari in Etosha National Park where they were lucky enough to see all the large game. The trip then ended with a visit to the Namib desert where all the team participated in an exhilarating dune boarding experience. Following the healthy return of all the team, they intend to share their experiences with the school and the wider community that made this trip possible.

02/07/2008
Abbot Beyne are the proud owners of a Bronze Award from the Eco-Schools Campaign. The majority of the work for this was completed during Year 9's Learning for life lessons and a more effective system for recycling waste paper has been developed. We believe that we are the first Secondary school in Burton to achieve this title. It is hoped that next year's Year 9 will continue the good work and will be working for the silver award in September and October's Learning for Life lessons.

01/07/2008

Abbot Beyne celebrated a good set of results today when Year 11 came to collect their GCSE results. 46.11% of students gained a grade C or above in 5 or more subjects and there were some exceptional achievements. All but two students gained a GCSE pass in at least one subject and 94% gained five or more passes.

Many students gained their passes at the higher grades (25% at B or above) but special mention must go to the girl who gained 12 passes at an A* grade, something to be very proud of.

16/08/2007
Students and Staff alike enjoyed a pleasing set of A level results today with many students realising their dream of going to University.

43% of results were the top two grades A or B and 96% of results were passes (E or above). Across the whole of Year 13, students exceeded their nationally set Alis targets by a tenth of a grade keeping the trend for excellent A Level results at Abbot Beyne.

They were all a credit to the school and especially themselves, We have visited many schools around Staffordshire and it must be said that your Year 10's are some of the best we have worked with. They went on to mention; Smart appearance, Good manners and behaviour, Excellent teamwork, Good listening, Positive attitude, Commitment to tasks, Reliable timekeeping, Good use of enterprise skills. They were also very impressed with the help and support from all the teachers, along with the school's hospitality.
